PTSD is short for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. We hear about it most often from those who experience the symptoms after returning from war or overseas conflicts. But did you know that abuse, illness, sexual assault or other trauma can also cause PTSD? Women, men and children can all be affected.
What are the symptoms?
“Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms may start within one month of a traumatic event. However, in some cases symptoms may not appear until years after the event. These symptoms cause significant problems in social or work situations and in relationships. They can also interfere with your ability to go about your normal daily tasks.
PTSD symptoms can vary in intensity over time. You may have more PTSD symptoms when you’re stressed in general, or when you come across reminders of what you went through. For example, you may hear a car backfire and relive combat experiences. Or you may see a report on the news about a sexual assault and feel overcome by memories of your own assault.” Mayoclinic.org
You may know of someone who has PTSD or you may know someone who you did not realize faces PTSD. Many are embarrassed, not able to talk about what they are feeling. It may be too traumatic or too painful. They have not even processed it yet, so expecting them to talk about it, pushing them to talk about it, thinking it will make them feel better, rarely fits where they are at that moment.
There are four general “types” of PTSD
Symptoms can vary over time or from person to person. Let’s take a look at each one. Multiple crystal/mineral suggestions will be made so that you or the one you love has many options to choose from and can select what they are drawn to.
Changes in physical and emotional reactions
- Being easily startled or frightened
- Always being on guard for danger
- Self-destructive behavior, such as drinking too much or driving too fast
- Addiction Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
- Trouble concentrating
- Irritability, angry outbursts or aggressive behavior
- Overwhelming guilt or shame
Sometimes choosing to cover the pain or destroy it all together by using drugs or alcohol seems “easier”. Many crystals/minerals can aid in self-destructive behavior/addictions.
Crystals that may help
Labradorite is my top suggestion to use when facing and beating any type of addiction. It is a wonderful support stone.
Not only can Amethyst aid in facing and healing addiction, it is also able to help with feelings of anxiety and guilt. Amethyst is also a good piece to take to bed, helping to encourage deep sleep.
Lithium in Quartz works to help relax and feel more at ease with your situation and surroundings. It can ease anger outbursts and mood swings. It is also a great piece to work with when having trouble sleeping.
Hematite can help to ground and center the body and mind, helping to enhance concentration and focus. It is also a great piece to have when there are issues of extreme anger, irritability or hysteria.
Aragonite can help to ease anger, removing the pent-up, explosive feeling often repressed within.
Idocrase helps to cool anger and/or aggressive behavior.
Ruby and/or Moss Agate can help to strengthen focus and concentration.
Picture Jasper is a great piece to cool anger, but it also helps to ease guilt and burden.
Unakite is a wonderful stone to hold when comfort is needed and forgiveness is necessary. Oftentimes, those with PTSD feel extreme guilt and grief. Unakite will help to assist in healing these emotional wounds. Healing is always challenging and may not happen right away–it takes work and Unakite promises to stand by as long as is needed to assist in this healing process.
Dumortierite is used to relieve fears, panic, anxiety, depression, phobias and stress. It is also a great support stone to use in time of crisis. It helps to remain calm, maintain a mental clarity/focus and find your center.
- Trying to avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic event
- Avoiding places, activities or people who remind you of the traumatic event
As far as avoiding the event, I cannot think of a single crystal that can aid in facing the event all by itself. A supportive therapist, friend, family, etc. is more important here. And it takes time. My best advice is to take your time and do the work at your own pace when you are ready.
What I can do here is to suggest some support crystals/minerals that offer support IF you find yourself in a place you would rather not be.
Blue Calcite is a very supportive energy. It calms and soothes, allowing you to remove yourself quietly from the place or situation.
Diopside will hold your hand (figuratively) and lead you through the toughest of challenges, especially those you do not necessarily want to see. It is a very supportive and healing friend.
Negative changes in thinking and mood
- Negative thoughts about yourself, other people or the world
- Hopelessness about the future
- Memory problems, including not remembering important aspects of the traumatic event
- Difficulty maintaining close relationships
- Feeling detached from family and friends
- Lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed
- Difficulty experiencing positive emotions
- Feeling emotionally numb
Crystals that may help
Work with Black Tourmaline when you are feeling anxious or stressed, as it will help to ease these feelings within a very short time. It is also often used to remove/release negativity and negative thoughts.
Green Fluorite will help to ease emotional trauma.. It is particularly effective at transmuting negative energies within the your space, place or person.
Idocrase helps to clear negative thought patterns.
Magnetite can be used to alleviate negative emotions and to fill the space with clean, positive energy.
Black Obsidian will help to remove unloving/negative thoughts directed at the self or at others.
Pyrite can block/shield you from negative energies and increase the positive ones.
Smoky Quartz will relieve fear, lift depression, and enhance calmness and positive thought.
White or Golden Calcite aid and support with improved memory (disassociative amnesia).
Rainbow Obsidian can bring a sense of light into one’s life, encouraging every day activities once enjoyed.
Chrysocolla helps to balance the emotions and the emotional body, reduces anger, feelings of guilt, the pain of grief, or paralyzing fears. I often recommend Chrysocolla as a reminder that there is always hope, even when it appears all hope has been lost.
Work with Epidote in times of crisis, emotional trauma, fear and/or grief. It will help to restore feelings of hope.
Thulite helps to gently bring down the walls that are built around the heart, allowing you, when you are ready, to let someone in. It is a stone filled to the brim with compassion, empathy and kindness for self and others.
Symptoms of intrusive memories may include:
- Recurrent, unwanted distressing memories of the traumatic event
- Reliving the traumatic event as if it were happening again (flashbacks)
- Upsetting dreams or nightmares about the traumatic event
- Severe emotional distress or physical reactions to something that reminds you of the traumatic event
Reliving the event, be it during dream time or in real time, can be terrifying, emotionally distressing and physically challenging. The memories of that time are still raw, still traumatic, still distressing and very painful.
Nightmares and flashbacks are often a very real symptom of PTSD. There are some minerals/crystals that may help to change the energy of that fear into a softer, more supportive, tolerable energy. Let’s look at some crystals/minerals that can help to ease these Intrusive Memories symptoms.
Crystals that may help
Hematite is very helpful for keeping nightmares at bay. It is also a great piece to use when facing a crisis or traumatic event. It not only helps to ground and center, but is also a great support stone to have as one works through the trauma or traumatic event.
Septarian Nodules are often recommended to counteract nightmares and bad dreams.
Put some Lepidolite or Dalmatian Stone on a nightstand or under your pillow to relax the body and mind (subconscious where much of our information resides) before and during sleep.
Blue Calcite can be utilized as a natural sedative, helping to enhance calm and counteract the busy mind/subconscious while getting a more restful sleep. It is also a wonderful physical pain reliever.
Other crystals/minerals that may help to ease traumatic memories and flashbacks would include: Prehnite, Amethyst, Citrine, Chrysoprase, or Ametrine.
Look over the list carefully. Some of the same crystal suggestions may be in several places, as they can help to achieve relief with a variety of the issues.
This, of course, is a general list with general suggestions. Choose one, choose a group. Go with what resonates. I would be more than happy to create a crystal consultation specific to you or your loved one. Just click here.
Family and Friends
There are many hurdles for those who face PTSD. Many can be eased with support and understanding. At the same time, many who have PTSD hide it because they feel it would not be understood. That people will judge them or platitude them to death (that is the worst, by the way and not helpful in the least!)
Family and friends also have to understand what their son, daughter, friend, family member, etc is going through as they face PTSD. The family also can play a supportive role. Not a smothering role. Not the, “I just want my son/daughter back the way they were” role.
I often ran into this kind of mindset when I worked with a psychiatrist. I had time to chat with the families while the son or daughter was in with the doctor. They honestly did not understand the disease or issue. At all. This put more pressure on the one who was having the issues. That extra pressure from family to be who he/she was before………..
So, family and friends, sons and daughters, moms and dads, let my last suggestions be for you.
Crystal Suggestions for Family
Rose Quartz. It is about love, unconditional, non judgmental, all-inclusive love. This is what your loved one needs from you.
Grossularite (pink/green garnet) helps to improve both listening and communication skills. Listening, when and if your loved one is ready to talk? is HUGE.
Blue Aragonite helps to increase the power of listening, not just hearing the words, but connecting to them and the one speaking.
The combination stone of Fuchsite and Ruby enhances feelings of compassion, understanding and love.
PTSD comes in many shapes and sizes, intensities and symptoms. Whether you are facing PTSD yourself, or it is someone you love, my advice is the same. Be gentle with yourself. Create a support system. Find someone to talk to. PTSD counseling is a process. Many have benefited from it. There is no shame in it. You are important and worth it.
